{"id":112,"date":"2011-03-15T15:00:58","date_gmt":"2011-03-15T15:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.abetteremergency.com\/blog\/?p=112"},"modified":"2011-03-15T15:00:58","modified_gmt":"2011-03-15T15:00:58","slug":"terrorists-get-it-why-dont-we","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abetteremergency.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/terrorists-get-it-why-dont-we\/","title":{"rendered":"Terrorists Get It &#8211; Why Don&#8217;t We?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In October 2002, Chechen rebels seized a theater in downtown Moscow, holding nearly 1,000 people hostage.\u00a0 The siege ended when Russian authorities introduced a fentanyl-type derivative to render all parties inside unconscious.\u00a0 One-hundred and twenty-seven hostages died due to untimely medical care, but it was a near perfect tactical operation.\u00a0One reason for the success of the operation was intelligence obtained through cell phone calls made by patrons inside the theater.<\/p>\n<p>The lesson of the value of individuals making cell phone calls was not lost on the Chechens. In their next attack on a school with more than 1,000 hostages, they quickly confiscated all cell phones. They knew the capabilities of these cellphones to provide useful intelligence to the authorities.<\/p>\n<p>The real question is, did we learn the lesson and realize how valuable a tool new mobile communication devices are to public safety agencies?
