{"id":240,"date":"2011-09-02T17:05:45","date_gmt":"2011-09-02T17:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.abetteremergency.com\/blog\/?p=240"},"modified":"2017-02-12T13:23:14","modified_gmt":"2017-02-12T13:23:14","slug":"earthquake-threat-to-nuclear-reactors-far-higher-than-realized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abetteremergency.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/earthquake-threat-to-nuclear-reactors-far-higher-than-realized\/","title":{"rendered":"Earthquake Threat to Nuclear Reactors Far Higher Than Realized"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Working on New Madrid project, I read DOE reports which indicated no problems for nuclear plants in the shake zone.\u00a0 Scientific reports were one thing and I tend to follow data, but I also like to apply a touch of common sense.\u00a0 An earthquake predicted to effectively cut the country into an east and a west seems capable of doing some interesting things to any man-built structure.<\/p>\n<p>After the event in Japan and doing a little research into seismic standards in place when the plants were constructed, it became apparent a second look was a prudent activity. I am glad to see this government action. The challenge will be in the NRC actually implementing any enhancements.\u00a0 &#8220;&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424053111904583204576544870054511938.html\">The effort to enact those changes, however, could be hampered by a federal requirement that any costly upgrades be justified by commensurate, tangible improvements in safety. Since earthquakes are hard to predict, that could become contentious<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This should be interesting to follow. Will we mitigate risk?
