Washington State law prevents all-hazards planning - Jan Glarum - 04-29-2017

I had real trouble believing this law has not been repealed.

What are your thoughts? What would you do if you were an emergency manager within the State of Washington?

I agree, it is a stupid law. That said, most existing earthquake/tsunami evacuation planning would be relevant, so it isn't as if Seattle is totally unprepared. Also, despite all the rhetoric, I think the chance of a missile attack is extremely remote. I am much more concerned about a HEMP attack from a satellite, which would cripple our entire country (but that's another topic).

FWIW, I know both state representatives and the state senator from my district. They are all intelligent, sensible people who care about their duties to the people, which is a real rarity these days. I just sent a message to one of them (Joel Kretz), and he replied immediately that it is a crazy law and that he will do some research. I don't expect anything to happen until the next session of course, but know that there is at least one good man looking into it. I think with the combination of media coverage and motivated politicians that this law's days are numbered.

Great comments. I agree 100% that I am not concerned with a state sponsored ballistic missile attack. On the other hand I think an IND is a possibility particularly in any city with a port. There are some operational differences in evacuations and shelter-in-place considerations with this type event not covered in earthquake/tsunami planning.

That's really great you reached out to your representatives and the feedback you received. Good job.
